Modern Transition

Okay, so I've been doing some roleplaying with a good friend of mine, about male pregnancy, and she agreed to let me post the following story on this forum. However I would like to give co-author credit to my friend Liz, who helped me develop this. Some of you may know her as "MalePreggo" from the Paternity Universe forums. And a special note, Thanks Liz for your ideas. They were crazy enough to work.

Modern Transition
By Mpregguy and MalePreggo
(Matthew and Liz)

Elizabeth came home from work on that cold winter night, to her studio apartment in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. She despised the cold and was glad to finally be back home. Though it was only 5:30, the sun was gone, and the sky was completely black. Streetlights were on outside her apartment building. Snow was still, laying on the ground from a storm that came through last week. But that didn't concern Elizabeth anymore. She had her own worries.
She was specifically worried about this ominous warning she got from her boss earlier today. "Beware of that one guy." her boss had warned her, "You'll know when you meet him." She microwaved dinner for herself, and then thought of what her boss said. She was baffled by the statement. She then remembered how life in middle-management was slowly destroying her from the inside. She needed to get out. She hoped the phone would ring immediately and someone would offer to take her to some fantastical land. Suddenly, the phone rang, as if by telekinesis.

"Hello?" she answered the phone.
"Hi." a man said on the other line. Elizabeth started to suspect he might be "the guy" her boss spoke about vaguely. "Is Stephanie home?"
"No one of that name lives here." Elizabeth said.
"I must have a wrong number then."
"Don't hang up!" Elizabeth became very nervous and very curious, "Can I know your name?"
"Is it that important?" he asked.
"Please, it is."
"The name's Joseph." he said, "And I was look for someone by the name of Stephanie Avon."
"She doesn't live here." Elizabeth said, "She moved out a week ago." Elizabeth began to lie. She had to keep this man talking, "Maybe I could give her a message."
"I have to deliver this to her personally." the man said calmly.
"You can tell me." Elizabeth ignored that her dinner finished cooking. "I'll tell her!"
"It's company policy I tell no one but her." the man explained, "I'm sorry, I can't tell you anything. Who are you anyway?"
Elizabeth froze up. She listened as the man hung up on the other line. She cursed herself for not telling the truth. Maybe the call would have gone better.

Elizabeth ate her dinner and kept thinking about the call. He must have been the man her boss was talking about. He said she would know him when she met him. Elizabeth just knew. But luckily, Elizabeth had a special program on her computer. She was quite the expert. She could connect her phone to her laptop, and could pinpoint the location of any call that was made in the past 24 hours. She did find the location, which was rather quite startling. It came from the office she worked in. But because she was in no rush to find this mystery person who called her she slept knowing, she would find him tomorrow.
The next day she began to drive to work as usual. The sky was cloudy, and there was traffic on the highways. She looked all around for something interesting, but couldn't see anything. She did see some sirens in her rear view mirror, but she dismissed it as nothing. She drove casually into her office parking lot, and walked in to begin her day at work. But then she spied something she could not believe. She saw a man at the reception desk next to her spoke with the exact same voice she heard over the phone.

Meanwhile, out in the parking lot three men dressed in black suits, and armed with guns sat quietly in a black sedan. They kept looking to see who was going in and out. "I don't see him." the first said.
"We know his location." the third replied, "Keep looking."
Suddenly the man whom Elizabeth had spoken with walked up to the front of the office building. "That's him!" the first said.
"Should we go now?" the second asked.
"Wait." the third said, "We'll find our opportunity."
They saw Elizabeth walk into the building. "Who's she?" the second asked.
"I dunno." the first said, "Is she tailing him too."
"I'm following him now." the third got out of the car."
"Us too!" the first replied. They all got out of the car, and walked casually up to the front of the office. They were ready for a fight.
Inside, Elizabeth did recognize the man she spoke with on the phone. And as he walked away, she signed in to the office, and followed him. About thrity feet away.

The three men wearing suits all pushed by Elizabeth and ran up to the other man. Elizabeth was about forty feet away looking down a long corridor, when she saw the three men grab hold of the other. "Don't hurt him!" Elizabeth shouted.
The three men looked at each other and looked back at her.
"Lady, if you know what's good for you, leave him alone!" the third man warned.
"Don't hurt Joseph!" she cried.
Joseph wondered how she knew his name.
"Don't come any closer!" Joseph said. Elizabeth ignored his warnings and ran towards him. Suddenly one shot was fired. Elizabeth shrieked and ducked down. The bullet hit a window and shattered the glass. The three men ran off, and Joseph ran over and grabbed Elizabeth.
"We've got to get out of here!" he said.

With Elizabeth crouched under his arm, Joseph ran and ducked for cover behind a door. He saw three police officers run by him, without noticing. Joseph ran down a darkened hall, and into a maze of cubicles. "Are you okay?" he asked Elizabeth.
"No!" she said, "I've been shot at!"
"I had it under control." Joseph said, "Those guys aren't looking for company."
"Who are they?" Elizabeth asked.
"Bad guys." Joseph explained, "How did you know my name?"
"You called my house yesterday." Elizabeth said.
"Stephanie?"" he asked.
"No, Elizabeth." she said, "The wrong number."
"Oh!" Joseph said, "Can I trust you to deliver the message to Stephanie?" he asked.
Elizabeth nodded her head, in a big lie that would change her future. "Tell her the specimens are ready. They'll be shipped to India the minute I can."
"Yeah." Elizabeth said. She had no idea hat he was talking about. Suddenly the men came from the other end of the work area.
"They're here." Joseph said pointing at them. Three men did not see them. "Go hide!" Joseph pushed Elizabeth into an office door. He then shut it. The three men spied Joseph and walked towards him. There was going to be a conflict.

oseph casually walked towards his attackers. But two of them grabbed him, one by each arm, and brought him into the nearest lavatory, without anyone noticing. Joseph was thrown up against the tile wall. "Where are they?" the first asked, "Those specimens have been taking too long."
Joseph remained silent. The second man brought out his gun. The first gave him the hand signal to not shoot. The third man picked Joseph up by the arms, and held him. The first punched Joseph in his gut. "We need them now!" the second shouted.
"They're not done!" Joseph groaned. Another punch hit his stomach.
"We're losing patience with you!" the first man said. He grabbed Joseph's coat and pulled his body towards him. But suddenly he felt a small bulge right under his sleeve. He grabbed Joseph's coat and pulled from it a small container with containing pills and water.
"If you had them, why didn't you give it to us?" the third asked.
"They're highly volatile." Joseph said, "They might act as a poison if taken wrong."
"You had your time." the first man said, "Now it's our turn."
"You can't expect to use them." Joseph said. None of the three men listened. Joseph made a lunge for the first man. The third grabbed him again. hit him across the face.
"Don't do that!" the first shouted. He grabbed the back of Joseph's hair and he hit his head on the tile wall. Joseph fell to the floor, unconscious, and bleeding from his nose and head.
"I have an idea." the second man announced, "We needed our subject, so why don't we make him it?"
The first man laughed. "Good idea." The first man pulled a pill from the container. "Joe, you have now been selected as our volunteer." He stuffed the pill in Joseph's mouth, and the three men walked away.
Suddenly they saw Elizabeth as they exited the lavatory. She was just standing there, asking for trouble. The first man reached for his gun, but then he saw several office workers were staring at the scene. He did not want to risk it. "Cheese it." the first said quietly.
All three of them disappeared down the hall.

Elizabeth looked around. She saw nothing except locked office doors, and one elevator with a silver door. She noticed it required a card key to use. "Elevator." Joseph muttered.
"I can't use it!" Elizabeth said.
Joseph used up much of his energy lifting his arm, trying to reach inside his jacket. His arm fell out, and so did a card key. Elizabeth knew what it was for.
She used the card key and called for the elevator. She took Joseph inside the brightly-lit elevator and closed the door. She had no clue which floor to choose. Joseph swung his arm up, and grabbed a railing. He pointed to a button, and tried to press it. Elizabeth knew he was trying to tell her where to go. Elizabeth pulled Joseph out of the elevator into a laboratory. At least twenty people stared at the two of them. But after they realized who was with Elizabeth, they rushed to his aid. "Are you alright, Matt?" they asked him.
"How did this happen?" another asked. Elizabeth was getting more questions than answers.

The researchers in the lab took Joseph, who was on a stretcher at this point, into a hospital room, and told Elizabeth she could not enter. Elizabeth complained but was told she had to wait outside. Elizabeth sat in the chairs, and woman walked up to her, very swiftly, from down the hall. she had black hair, and a mad expression. "Who the hell are you?" she asked.
"Elizabeth Baker." she replied, "Will Joseph be okay."
"I'm not sure." she spoke again, "How did he get injured?"
"Three men... I don't know who... they beat him." Elizabeth admitted.
"Most likely." the woman said. "Damn them. I should have known we should have worked faster."
"Who were the men?" Elizabeth asked.
"People, who want something we've got." the woman said nothing more.
"The specimens?" Elizabeth asked.
The woman stared even more angrily. Then, her look turned to that of severe surprise, "How did you know about that?"
"Joseph said something about Specimens." Elizabeth said, "And of someone called Stephanie."
"I am Stephanie." the woman said, "And unfortunately, now that you are here you cannot leave until we say so."
"I suspected as much." Elizabeth said.

Elizabeth sat and waited for hours and hours, waiting for an answer to what just happened. She saw doctors, nurses, surgeons, and anesthesiologists go in and out of Joseph's room. Finally after waiting and waiting outside that room for such a long time, Stephanie beckoned for Elizabeth to come inside and see Joseph.
When she came in, she saw Joseph lying on the hospital bed. A large bandage was wrapped around the side of his head. It was stained with his blood. He was conscious, but looked in pain. Stephanie continued to beckon to Elizabeth. Elizabeth detected malcontent in her. "Just what do you remember about what happened to him?"
"The three guys?" she asked.
"How did they find him?" Stephanie asked.
"They just knew." Elizabeth said.
"They just knew, right after he called you last night, or right after you followed him into the building, right?" Stephanie accused.
"I didn't lead them to him." Elizabeth, "I wanted them to stop."
"She's right." Joseph said from his bed, "I knew they were after me long before I met her."

"Her name still isn't cleared!" Stephanie said, "I want to know why you trusted her with information, not knowing what her intents were!"
"They were good!" Elizabeth argued, "Honestly, I have no clue what's going on here, but I wanted to help him."
"I knew she would." Joseph said.
"Thanks, Joe." Elizabeth smiled.
"Will you stop calling me Joe?" Joseph said, "It's not even my real name, my real name's Matthew Martinson."
"Why did you lie?" Elizabeth asked.
"He's required to." Stephanie said, "We're not going to arouse suspicion by not telling people names are we?"
"I don't understand what's so secret bout what you're doing here." Elizabeth asked, "Are you working for the government?"
"No." Stephanie said, "We work for this company, just like you. Three years ago, this division was requested to produce certain unnamed specimens for the corporation. Unfortunately our boss got impatient, and sent his goons out to ambush Matthew, and me to get them." Stephanie paused with worry, "We're all targets, Elizabeth."

"What are the specimens?" Elizabeth asked.
Suddenly a surgeon opened the door, and looked in the room. "Ma'am, will you step outside please?" he asked Stephanie. Stephanie walked out of the room, ignoring the question.
"What are they, Matthew?" Elizabeth asked.
Matthew frowned, "If you knew what the specimens were, you would be killed in the next 24 hours." Matthew warned, "It's better if you don't know. All I can tell you, is that they're dangerous and deadly, until we ship them to Chennai, India in a month.
"He did what?!" they heard Stephanie shout from outside, "Why would he?"
Stephanie stormed back in the room very angrily and ready to spew venom.
"Matthew!" Stephanie shouted. She held up a little orange bottle, "You were supposed to have ten specimens in this little bottle, sealed of and shut tight! The seal is broke, and there are only nine!"
"One was probably stolen." Matthew said.
"We know where it is!" Stephanie said, "We did a scan and saw it was in you! Why the hell was it there?"
"Oh my God..." Matthew became worried, "Get it out of me!"
"It's too late!" Stephanie said, "How did it get in you!"
"Those creeps!" Matthew said, "They must have fed it to me while I was unconscious!"
"Why is it bad?" Elizabeth asked.
"Now she can know what the specimens are." Matthew said.
"The specimens are actually organic lifeforms that can be taken orally, and survive digestion, to be absorbed in the bloodstream. Once in the blood, they are unstoppable, multiplying by hundreds every minute. The minute that one finds a specific artery that runs along the pelvic bone, it implants, and sends out a hormone that kills all other specimens floating around. From there the specimen grows and gestates for only two months."
"Gestates?" Elizabeth asked, "You mean like pregnancy?"
"Almost exactly such." Stephanie said.
"So Matthew's pregnant?" Elizabeth giggled.
"Yes." Stephanie said, "It only takes ten minutes after ingestion for the specimen to hit the bloodstream, and only 30 minutes before one implants. If that is the case, Matthew has been pregnant for three hours."

"Congratulations, Matthew?" Elizabeth giggled.
"I wouldn't laugh if I were you." Stephanie said.
"Take it from me." Matthew said.
"You, shush." Stephanie said, "Because you know about Matthew's pregnancy and the specimens, you are now authorized and deputized to transport the specimens to their final location."
"What?" Elizabeth asked, "What does that mean?"
"It means you're going with Matthew to India." Stepahnie said. "You're leaving next week. And even better, because Matthew is the one who is currently gestating the specimen you are put in charge of many of his responsibilities, of which he cannot perform currently."
"What?!"
"You heard her." Matthew said.

"There's something else." Stephanie said, "This will probably be some very bad news for you, but the specimen is still very dangerous."
"I can cope." Matthew said.
"Most likely not." Stephanie said, "The specimen has already begun to excrete hormones into your bloodstream. Hormones which will give you very terrible symptoms. It may get harder, and harder for you to do your duties. The hormones will make you feel weak, violent, volatile, have huge mood swings, muscle spasms, and may be even more dangerous."
"How so?" Matthew asked.
"The final stage is characterized by a special hormone that is poisonous to humans. Failure to deliver on time may result in death Even if you do deliver on time there may be some permanent injury, or poisoning."
"You can't get it out of me?" Matthew asked.
Stephanie shook her head, "The specimens were designed to implant and live, without fail. I never figured you'd be on the receiving end of it."

Stephanie kept talking, "You will leave in two weeks, and arrive promptly in time." she focused her attention to Matthew and felt his pain, "And maybe have a quick trip arranged to Sydney for quick surgery."
"Alright." Matthew said.
"But I won't guarantee anything." Stephanie said as she walked out. Elizabeth followed her.
"I have plans for you too." Stephanie said, "You're going with him. I guarantee it."
"I know." Elizabeth said, "But I'm scared."
"Don't be." Stephanie said, "Matthew knows how to handle things. Listen to him and you'll be fine."
For some awkward reason, Stephanie felt reassured by what was going on around her. After comprehending her situation, and actually taking time to think about it, she knew she shouldn't have been, but somehow was anyway.
She did not see Matthew at all the next week. She did not even leave the building. All she could do was sit in her office and watch people ignore her. She was ignored by everyone except her boss, who only approached her and said quite clearly "I told you to watch out for him." She was too nervous to respond back.

And so, Elizabeth returned to her work for just a short period of one week. She told no one what happened, nor did she try to escape. She knew her fate, and accepted it. But it was that Friday, she knew she would have to leave. She made no attempt to forget what she saw. It'd be too irresponsible. And it would be just her luck to leave on a Friday. She'd miss a very good weekend.
And thusly, Elizabeth acted like she was staying late on a Friday. She stayed until everyone else had left, and waited. She knew someone was coming for her. She just hoped it wouldn't be as violent as what happened to Matthew.
But still, she was puzzled about what the specimens were for. She hadn't even the slightest idea about what they could be used for. A dangerous organic lifeform that can survive in anyone's body? It semed absurd.
But after everyone left her office she waited and waited for someone to come. Finally, she saw Stephanie appear at her door. Elizabeth nodded to her, and stood up. She was ready to leave.

"Get ready." Stephanie said.
"I am." Elizabeth pointed out.
"You mean you're going like that?" Stephanie asked.
"I figured you would have something else for me to wear." Eizabeth shrugged.
"What made you think that?" Stephanie asked.
"Well, you are a secret contracted laboratory producing something way ahead of your time." Elizabeth walked to the door, "Maybe you'd have a change of clothes lying around?"
"Fair enough." Stephanie led her out to the secret elevator she was in before. But this time, she was going up. The two of them were heading towards the roof of the building. When they stepped out, stephanie saw she was standing on the roof of her office tower. She saw a helicopter pad painted on the roof. Now she knew a bit how she was getting to Chennai. After only a few minutes of waiting, the helicopter appeared out of the purple sky. When it landed, Stephanie beckoned Elizabeth aboard.
Elizabeth was a little nervous to see Stephanie wasn't coming, "What're you staying for?" Elizabeth asked.
"I'm your eye in the states." Stephanie said, "If you're incapacitated, hurt, ambushed, or if anything goes wrong, you just call me and I'll immediately send help."
"How do I call you?" Elizabeth yelled over the roar of the rotors.
Stepahnie threw her a small device. It looked like a calculator. "Enter eight 9s on this device. Divide by 3, press the square root key, and you'll instantly send a distress signal back to this office. Once you send the signal, help can be wherever you are at in five minutes."
"Thank you." Elizabeth said.
"No." Stephanie added, "Thank you."
The helicopter took off, and Elizabeth watched as both Stephanie and her office disappeared into the distance.

The helicopter landed at an airport, which was far away from most places of civilization. The airport was hidden away from everything. As the helicopter landed on the tarmac, Elizabeth knew it was too dark to see anything. But she entered the airport which was well lit.
She knew immediately it wasn't a public port. There were only three gates, and it was guarded by men, not soldiers, carrying automatic weapons. She sat down at one of the gates. She was surrounded by a security detail of more men with weapons. She noticed that only a few seats down from her, was Matthew.
He sat in his seat, next to what appeared to be a doctor. He sat cradling a slightly swollen belly, as his pregnancy was taking shape. Elizabeth decided to go over and see the two of them.
She walked over and Matthew noticed her. The two of them waved at each other. Elizabeth sat down next to Matthew, opposite his doctor.
"Nice to see you're alive." she said.
"I know." Matthew said, "There have been times where I felt on the verge of death."
"When are we leaving?" Elizabeth asked.
"Soon." Matthew said.
"Not before you have your injection." the doctor said.
"Oh, Elizabeth." Matthew said, "I'd like you to meet my... well, obstetrician, Dr. Leavitt."
"Pleased to meet you." Elizabeth said.
"The same." the doctor said, "And you're not leaving the ground until you've had your injection."
"What injection are you talking about?" Elizabeth asked.
"Tetra-chloro nonaoctanone." Matthew said, "It's a chemical that fights off the harsh pregnancy symptoms."
"And you should have it once every twelve hours." he said, "You had your last one this morning."
"I know, Doc." Matthew said, "I'll go to the bathroom and take it now."
Doctor Leavitt handed Matthew a small syringe filled with cliudy liquid. The syringe had been kept in his bag. As Matthew walked away, Elizabeth noticed the pregnancy changes that were happening to him. She noticed he had been very thin before, and very fit. Now he was starting to show. He was, in fact wearing a tight shirt. Maybe it made the effect more noticable.

While the two of them were away in private, Elizabeth was told it was time to board her flight. Naturally she assumed that she would be riding on the company's luxurious Boeing, but her paradigm shifted when she was told to where a spacesuit. Shge was handed a glass helmet, and an orange jumpsuit, with oxygen tanks on the back. A team of men helped her step into the jumpsuit, and then attached the helmet on. She was put on a private bus and ferried across the tarmac, to one spot that was lit by a single spotlight. She saw what appeared to be a large fighter jet, completely painted black, except for one series of letters painted on the side. Those letters read "SR-71 Blackbird; A-Model".
Elizabeth knew that this plane was the fastest in existence. The fact that she was riding i one of these immeditaly declared a state of urgency. She was told to sit inside the control deck, just behind the pilots. They too, were wearing spacesuits. And the flight began toi leave as Matthew and his doctor boarded. They sat behind Elizabeth.
"What're the suits for?" she asked to Matthew. He did not hear her, "Matthew?" she asked again. He still couldn't hear her. "Matthew!" she shouted. Mathew finally looked at her.
"What is it?" he said in a normal voice that rang clear into her ears.
"Why are we wearing these?" she shouted.
"Turn on your radio." he said back to her motioning to a switch on her collar, "You won't hear a thing without it."
Elizabeth flipped on her radio and asked, "Why are we wearing these?"
"We're flying high tonight." Matthew explained, "These babies fly at the brink of space, so you'll need it. The air gets too thin in here to breathe."
"Why are we taking this?" she asked.
"Because," Matthew continued, "There could be serious consequences if we don't get to Chennai in two hours."

Elizabeth tried to remain silent the whole flight. After all, she did feel it was a bit awkward communiating only through radio. Of course, she was also afraid that she might be inhaling too much oxygen. But she knew it was not the time to panic.
Matthew, as well, was on the verge of panic. Even thoughhe'd only recently had his injection, he knew it would take a while to ward off the symptoms of his pregnancy. The same symptoms that were beginning to flare up on the flight. Occasionally he had to go to the restroom to deal with the stabbing pain coming from his stomach. He could already see that he was losing the complexion in his face.
But soon the plane was now over central India, and it was almost time to land. Of course, the SR-71 was landing at an airport in Malaysia, which was over one thousand miles away. Instead, Matthew, Elizabeth, Matthew's doctor and a small security detail were all given parachutes to fall out of the plane at high altitude.
When Elizabeth was handed her parachute she almosat screamed. She never imagined she would fall 20,000 feet to a densely populated city. But still, she was assured her spacesuit would provide enough oxygen to keep her from fainting. That being said, she was grabbed by one of the passengers and pulled out of the plane. She screamed as she fell. She could not see anything in the night, except for some orange lights down below. She closed her eyes.
"Elizabeth!" her radio crackled, "Elizabeth!" She came to all of the sudden, "Elizabeth! Open your chute!"
She did not know who was telling her this. But she didn't know what to do. "The red tab!" the voice said, "Pull the red tab on your left shoulder!"
She yanked the tab, and she was yanked upward as her parachute opened. She noticed the flashing white light on top, so everyone could see her location. She saw everyone flutter down to the top of a tall building. And there she landed expecting another adventure.

Elizabeth saw the members of her team standing atop a twenty-story skyscraper. She took a deep breath as she landed. An aide came over to her and took off her helmet. The humid air of the subcontinent came rushing in. She was then helped out of her spacesuit. She wiped her eyes and itched her nose. She had been dying to for the pat ten minutes.
Soon everyone was out of their suits, and they were headed to an elevator shaft. At this time of night nobody was in the building, so the elevator was shut down. Matthew didn't expect this.
"Well." he said thinking of something, "Looks like we're rappelling."
"What?" Elizabeth asked.
"We're climbing down on rope." he said.
"Can't we just take the stairs?" Elizabeth was tired.
"Everything's locked." Matthew said, "And we're doomed if we set off the alarm."
Elizabeth was handed a hook for rappelling, and a pair of gloves. She climbed in the shaft, hooked up her rope, and took that leap of faith down. The shaft had lights in it, as a matter of fact, so she could tell when she landed on the elevator on the first floor.
"This is it!" Matthew said. "Elizabeth, Doc, and I will take this route down." he pointed to a ventilation shaft. He then looked at the security team and said, "Thanks for all your help, we'll take it from here?"
The security team left out a completely different shaft. "What were they for?" Elizabeth asked.
"To ward off any enemies." Matthew said.
"We have lots of them." the Doctor said.
"I think I ntoiced." Elizabeth remarked.
The three of them cautiously proceeded to slide down the ventilation shaft until they came to the bottom. When Elizabeth arrived Matthew had already broken through the air duck and fallen into another bright room. She too followed, and awaited further instructions.

When Elizabeth jumped out of the ventilation shaft she ended up inside a room, with green tiles on the walls. There were several metal cabinets, all which reflected the flourescent light glow in the room.
The gurney in the center menat only one thing: it was an operating room. Elizabeth got the chills just from thinking about it.
She looked as three tall dark-skinned Indian men walked throught he door. Elizabeth was afraid she had been compromised. But Matthew kept his cool. He stared down each one of the men. "What do you know about show business, Mr. Martinson?" the one in the center asked.
"Only there's no business like it." Matthew said, "No business I know."
The man who Matthew spoke to nodded and smiled, "It's so good to see you again."
"You too, Girish." The two of them hugged. Elizabeth was confused, but soon began to figure everything out. The whole bit about show business must have been a code, to make sure that there were no imposters.
"Elizabeth!" Matthew said, "Allow me to introduce Girish Gupta. He's a leading expert on endocrinology."
"And allow me to introduce Punjab, and Chopra." he pointed to the two men behind him, "They're my assisstants."
"Hello." Elizabeth said nervously, "Do you all work for the same company."
"Same one." Girish said, "Maybe you didn't realize it was a worldwide enterprise?"
The thought never crossed Elizabeth's mind. "Come on in." he said, "We have a transaction to make."

"I take it you have the specimens?" Girish asked.
"Yes." Matthew said, "I take it you have payment?"
"It was wired to your branch yesterday." Girsh said, "That's why I'm so eager to see the specimens."
"Hold on a minute!" Matthew said, "I thought we'd be getting cash."
"It's inefficient." Girish said, "I sent ten million dollars from my branch to yours using private transaction. No cash, no money orders. We need something secure."
"You might as well have sent the money right to Washington!" Matthew said, "That's exactly what the government is looking for!"
"The government?" Elizabeth said, "We're up against the government?"
"It's not that simple." Matthew said.
"I don't want to have to go up against the same organization that runs the US Army!"
"Alright!" Matthew said, "I'll explain. The project where we developed the specimens was Codenamed Project Deliverance, and started in 1999. The project was to develop organic life forms that could survive in the most hostile environments and restart life on Earth, in the even of a nuclear catastrophe. In 2004 we were ordered to shut down the project, because the government was making its own. Because we were close to getting results, we didn't back down. Now a secret military divison named Gamma Falcons have been trying to abduct the specimens." Matthew took the bottle witht the secimen pills and held it up for all to see. "They want this."
"Well," Elizabeth said, "That's quite a target."

"What was that supposed to mean?" Elizabeth asked as the two of them walked back to the operating room where they had entered.
"He meant exactly what he said." Matthew said, "It's not good."
"Well, could you specify?" Elizabeth said.
"Questions, questions... you ask all these questions!" Matthew shouted, "As yourself this, if you knew you would be dead in two months would you have someone else wasting your time?"
Elizabeth frowned. She knew now she waded into dangerous conversational terriotry.
"I'm sorry." Matthew said, "I'm just having a bad day."
"No one blames you." Elizabeth said, "I just want to know what's going to happen to you."
Matthew took a deep breath, and stopped in his tracks. "I'm dying, Elizabeth." she muttered.
Elizabeth was shocked to hear this. Se didn't expect that at all. "Is it the... specimens?"
"Yes." Matthew said, "It's a parasitic life form growing inside me. It's supposed to be harmless, but it wasn't refined yet. Right now I'm taking medicine that will stave off the growth of further specimens within me, but after about two more weeks I'll have a tolerance to it, and it won't work anymore."
"Than it..." Elizabeth couldn't speak, "Gets worse?"
"Yes." Matthew said, "I will be nearly incapacitated. I will have enough energy left to function, but the specimens will suck everything else out of me. Finally, when they're ready to be born, they'll emit a toxic substance that will kill me, and then they'll birth themselves."
"That's disgusting." Elizabeth said.
"That's frightening." Matthew corrected. "Come on, let's get out of here before we're tracked."
