Mariscka had always thought that she was different sort of girl. Even though she lived with her mother, Andrea, and her father, Brandon, she had always known that she wasn't exactly the same. And it wasn't because she was 75% deaf either; it had to do with the features of her parents. She looked nothing like them in any way, shape, or form. Her mother had told her that there was nothing to be concerned about and that sometimes it happened that way.
But Mariscka didn't buy that and so when she was sixteen, she had learned that there was a free clinic that offered DNA tests. She just had to know who she was. She had always felt so all alone in the household and of course being deaf didn't make anything any better. It made her feel like an inconvenience to everyone she met. She could hardly make friends because she couldn't speak or be spoken to normally.
When she learned of the free clinic she debated about going for the longest time. One of the few normal people who was willing to learn sign language and be her friend, Kaylie, told her that if it bothered her so much that she should do it. But Mariscka also loved her parents very much and so she didn't want to hurt them if she found something not right. But it had been eating at her for so long that she finally gave in and went.

It was hard to explain to the receptionist that she came for a DNA test and was beginning to get flustered and flailing her hands in signs as well as nonsense when a warm hand touched hers. She looked up and saw the most beautiful boy she's ever seen. He was tall with dark brown hair and thin, rectangular glasses. He gave her a magnificent smile and looked her straight in the eyes, which most people tended to avoid.
What is it that you're wanting to do? he signed to her.
Mariscka was so surprised that he could sign that she froze with her mouth gaping open. She saw the nurse at the front desk get a surprised look on her face as if she had just realized Mariscka had been trying to speak to her all this time. The boy waited patiently though and she finally just blushed in embarrassment.
I'm here to get the free DNA testing done.
He nodded and told the nurse what she wanted. She waited, swirling her foot and feeling completely foolish. My luck that this hot guy knows sign language and I freeze like a deer in headlights. Way to go, Mariscka… she thought to herself.
She felt the warm hand on her shoulder and looked up.
The nurse says you'll have to fill this out and bring it back when you're done.
She nodded and he handed her the clipboard.
Thank you for helping me.
He smiled at her again. No problem. If you like, I'll sit beside you and tell you when they call… Can you read lips?
It's very difficult. she confessed, sitting and starting to fill out the paperwork.
Once she was done, she gave it back to the receptionist and sat down again. The boy watched her as she sat and bundled herself up in the coat she was wearing. It was snowing when she had come in and it didn't really help her balance with all that barometric pressure weighing down on her and she was cold-sensitive.
My name is Anthony; what's yours?
Mariscka
Interesting name…
Look, thanks for the help but even though I'm not that great at it, I can read lips.
Anthony looked at her, green eyes kind and almost sympathetic. That made Marsicka mad.
"Don't. Pity. Me." She said with her mouth, even though her voice was unattractive and deformed.
She didn't care; she just didn't want to be pitied by this guy she just met. Everyone pitied her. Poor little deaf child who only hears whispers and murmurs, never words or phrases. Poor little deaf child who has no friends. Poor. Little. Me. she growled in her head.
"I'm sorry I made you angry."
She looked up, startled at him.
What?
"I said I was sorry to have angered you." He said slowly.
I know what you said. But I could hear you. Loud and clear.
"Oh?" he said, leaning on his knees.
Why are you here?
"My dad has been having some problems as of late. See, he said he made this really bad mistake in college involving this deaf kid. He didn't do anything but he was part of the plan. About four months later, his hearing started to go and then eventually he was left with about 10% hearing left. He had to learn sign language and all sorts of stuff. He said that he thinks that kid cursed him and the other guys."
That's horrible.
"Well, my dad learned a lesson from that. But he said that the kid was Russian so he thinks it was some "gypsy curse" or whatever." Anthony shrugged. "Either way, a friend of his then got pregnant and everything. It was a strange conversation… Oh, they called you. Will you be alright in there?"
Yes, I will. Thank you very much.
He nodded and she went in the back.

About four months later, a letter came in the mail for her and luckily she was able to get to it before her parents did. She rushed up to her room and ripped open the envelope. As she had (sadly) expected, Brandon and Andrea were not the two names that appeared on the results. It was someone named Casey and a man named Sven. Sven? Who are these people? She knew it would break her parent's hearts for them to know that she had done this but she had to know.
She found Andrea and tapped her on the shoulder.
Yes dear?
Mariscka handed her the paper. Who am I?
Andrea looked at the paper and put her hand over her mouth in shock. She started to tear up and gave Mariscka a saddened look.
Why? Why did you do this?
Because I had to know. I knew you wouldn't tell me and I just… Mom, I still love you, I always will, but I had to know who I really was… Please…
Andrea grabbed her daughter's hand and pulled her to the couch. She looked at her and smiled softly.
"Sven is the name of the one who gave birth to you. You were born of mpreg."
Mpreg?
"It means that a man gave birth to you instead of a woman. It wasn't his fault though, you were an accident. But when he gave birth to you, he also died that very night. You were born in a cemetery, on the grave of your grandfather. There, Sven entrusted you to me and I took you in…"
Why did you never tell me?
"I was afraid… and you were so much like a daughter to me… But your father was deaf as well. When it first happened, I thought it was some sort of hereditary thing. But the doctor said you had a bad case of meningitis and that's what caused it. Oh, Mariscka, I'm so sorry."
That's alright. I understand… There was a boy when I went to the clinic there named Anthony. He spoke to me and I could understand him perfectly.
Andrea put her hand on her chin.
I don't know about that… Sven was like that sometimes with people but...
I'm going to find him. He said his father was deaf like me… I have to find him!
If you must but… just be careful please.
Mariscka nodded and started searching then and there.

After almost a whole month of searching and finding nothing, Mariscka sat on a bench in a park and watched some children play. She could barely hear anything other than the occasional high pitched scream, but the muffled sounds of laughter made her smile at least.
"Fancy meeting you here… of all places."
Mariscka looked up, startled, and saw Anthony standing there. He gave her a beautiful grin and she smiled back but she noticed something different about him.
What happened? she asked, looking at his small, round stomach.
Anthony gave a shy smirk and sat down slowly beside her.
"Would you believe me if I said it wasn't my fault?"
Depends…
"Let's just say too much drinking and a weird ass party…" he said grumpily.
Are you… pregnant?
"Yeah… Does that make you sick?" She shook her head no. "Good, because I thought my dad was going to start steaming from his ears… It wasn't my fault though…"
Whatever happened, I'm sure it wasn't… Um, why are you here?
"Thinking about carrying the baby and then leaving it somewhere someone will find it quickly… Like this park. I want someone to take care of it and love it with everything… I can't give it that happiness."
Why?
"Because my parents kicked me out… It's so dumb too because if my dad is into that Russian curse thing, then this is why he started going deaf."
What do you mean? The talks of curses and pregnant males were making Mariscka's head spin. What does mpreg have to do with his deafness?
Anthony looked down and sighed, rubbing his stomach a little.
"You want to know the real reason I was in that clinic?" he said, looking at Mariscka with sad eyes. "The same reason you were… My dad told me I was adopted but I wanted to know from whom."
"Oh."
"But anyway, him and these two other guys did these really horrible thing to this Russian kid at a graduation party. After that, things got weird for them all. He was deaf, the Russian kid was, and it was like a curse rang out from him when the deed was done. My dad started going deaf, the one guy that led him went blind, and the guy who did the horrible act got pregnant."
By the way things sounded, Mariscka knew exactly what took place.
"But then they found out that the kid got pregnant and was shunned by society and now my dad is being a total dick about all of this. He was involved with this sort of sick game when he was a teenager and he can't take sympathy for his son, who is now the victim?!"
Mariscka sighed and put her arm through his, putting her head on his shoulder to comfort him. Anthony laid his head on hers.
"Thanks… You know, it's almost like we were meant to be…"
Mariscka looked up and pulled away a little.
Do you happen to know the Russian kid's name?
"Sven, I think."
Are you sure?
"I'm guessing so… My dad never liked to speak of it. Why?"
Because he gave birth to me. I'm his daughter… He died when he gave birth to me.
"Oh… oh, Mariscka, I'm so sorry."
She shook her head no furiously. No! Don't be! My mother told me that he could hear her speak just like I can hear you. She said that it may have to do with… Mariscka blushed immensely. Uh… true love.
Anthony looked at her with wide green eyes but then gave a small smile, putting his forehead to hers.
"Yeah… maybe… Mariscka, would you go out with me?"
"Love to!" she said, wrapping her arms around him tight.
